Readbox: Fairy Tale Retellings

Out in our hallway, we currently have our Readbox on display! Visitors can scan the QR codes beneath each of the book titles on display to watch a retelling of that tale by the giraffes! Here are the available stories:

Full-On Fairy Tale Mode!

As we gear up for our Fairy Tale Wax Museum on the 19th, we have been doing all sorts of activities to get ourselves and our room ready! This week, we have been answering questions about our chosen characters and we began creating scrapbooks of their lives. We also began tracing our bodies and drawing our life-size portraits of our characters to hand up during the wax museum! THANK YOU to all of the parent volunteers who dedicated their time to helping us trace and draw this week!!

We also worked on creating a castle made completely out of recycled materials for the MakerFest! 

We also worked on finishing our fractured fairy tales so Ms. Riley could type them up on a Google Doc and create a QR Code to add to our castle so MakerFest visitors can read our stories! You can read the stories we've typed up so far here! 

We also wanted to get our hallway ready for the Wax Museum, so we used our shared bulletin board to create scenes from different fairy tales! We created Rapunzel's Tower and made little people to climb up her long braid, while 2A made a castle and 2AA made Jack's Beanstalk and the Giant's Castle. Next week, we will focus on finishing up our fractured fairy tales as well as our scrapbooks, and we will also work on painting our portraits and exploring our stories! 

Readbox-Less Waiting, More Reading!

 We've been working incredibly hard on writing book reviews for our favorite books. The first task we faced was figuring out which one was our favorite--there are just too many great books to choose from! Some of us chose books we've read during Reader's Workshop and read aloud while others chose favorites from years past and present that they've read at home with their families.

After deciding on our favorite book, we started writing about them. We came up with many reasons and examples to persuade others to want to read them as well. At the end of this week, we used the Shadow Puppet app we used earlier in the year with Mr. Gagnon to make "Book Trailers" for our reviews!

Once we created our "Book Trailers," we created QR codes using the app Qrafter to put on our Readbox! When someone finds a book on the Readbox they are interested, they can use a scanner app on their smartphone or tablet to read the QR code and watch the video! Our book selections are available in our classroom library as well as the SMS library, so if anyone is interested in the books on our Readbox, they can "rent" them to read themselves (only our books are free to rent). There is also another Readbox just down the hall with selections from Ms. Arnold's class! 

The rest of our QR codes will be up by Tuesday afternoon--they've all been tested and are ready to go :) Try testing a few from home! (Don't have a QR Scanner on your smart device? Use this Web QR scanner to watch our videos!)
