Diving Into Fairy Tales

Welcome back from vacation! We have spent the last two days diving into and getting to know various fairy tales so we can begin preparing for our Fairy Tale Wax Museum on April 6th! Forms are being sent home today to provide more information about the unit. On the form, students are asked to list their top three character choices for the wax museum. These choices must be returned by Monday, March 13th. Students will be notified about which character they will portray on or before Monday so they have plenty of time to prepare at home and in class for our big day!

Need some inspiration? Here is a list of fairy tales your child might like to explore:

Aladdin

Alice in Wonderland

Beauty and the Beast

Chicken Little

Cinderella

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Hansel and Gretel

Jack and the Beanstalk

Little Red Riding Hood

Peter Pan

Pinocchio

Rapunzel

Rip Van Winkle

Rumpelstiltskin

Shrek

Sleeping Beauty

Snow White

The Boy Who Cried Wolf

The Elves and the Shoemaker

The Emperor’s New Clothes

The Frog Prince

The Gingerbread Man

The Little Mermaid

The Little Red Hen

The Princess and the Pea

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The Three Little Pigs

The Ugly Duckling

Thumbelina

Tom Thumb

While almost all of these tales are available in our classroom, there are also lots of different versions of these stories in our school library as well as the Wiggin Memorial Library. Students are more than welcome to choose ANY main character from any fairy tale they have read before. Some may end up being different characters from the same fairy tale, so it is important for us to know which character they would like to be from the story. Meeting Mrs. Wormwood!

On Monday, Mrs. Wormwood hopped up off the pages of our read-aloud book Matilda and came to visit our classroom!

Mrs. Wormwood took time away from her busy schedule at the BINGO hall to visit the giraffes. We'd been looking forward to her visit for over a week, and we had lots of questions for her that had come up in our reading. We asked her about her family, her life, and about the decisions she had made in the story. While she doesn't like kids, she said we were "not annoying" and she "didn't mind us"!

Because she missed her daily Bingo session to visit us, we decided to play some Matilda-themed bingo as a class!

Even if Mrs. Wormwood isn't the nicest or most caring character, she was VERY funny and we loved being able to hang out with a character from our book! We hope she might come to our Character Soiree on Friday, February 7th to meet some more characters from the Giraffe Class :)

Diving Into Fairy Tales

Hello, Families!

When we return from vacation, we will be diving into fairy tales to prepare for our Fairy Tale Wax Museum on April 7th! We will spend our first week back exploring different fairy tales to help us decide on which fairy tale characters we'd like to be for the wax museum. Forms were sent home the week before vacation with more information about our unit. On the form, students are asked to list their top three character choices for the wax museum. These choices must be returned by Friday, March 10th. Students will be notified about which character they will portray on or before Friday so they have plenty of time to prepare at home and in class for our big day!

Fairy Tale Scrapbooks

One of the many things we did in preparation for our Wax Museum was creating a scrapbook of our fairy tale character! We drew portraits of our character as well as a picture of their home, we wrote about their favorite foods, hobbies, their friends and family, and about their ultimate "Happily Ever After". Can you guess who these characters are just by looking at the pages in their scrapbooks?

Preparing for Our Big Day

We've been spending lots of time preparing for our Fairy Tale Wax Museum. In addition to studying numerous fairy tale stories and becoming our characters, one major part of this project involves creating a life-size poster of our characters to hang behind our "wax figures", so parent volunteers have come in to help us draw and paint these posters to bring our museum to life.

We first needed to draw out all of the details on our posters, and once our pencil drawings were complete, we were ready to begin painting.

We will be adding a few more details to our posters next week, and before we know it, it will be time to put them on display. Meanwhile, we've also been working hard to grow our beanstalks. Some have already reached up to the giant's castle!

Welcome to The Giraffe Kingdom!

On Tuesday, we held our first-ever Fairy Tale Wax Museum! We'd been preparing for this event for quite some time, and we were thrilled to be able to see it come to life.

When our guests walked in the door, they grabbed a sheet of questions to ask our wax figures. When they found a character they wished to speak with, they pressed their "button" on their painting and watched them pop up to life! The characters did an excellent job of remaining still when waiting to be asked a question, but soon they had so many visitors that they were able to stay animated throughout the rest of the morning! In addition to checking out our characters, guests could also read the scrapbooks they created about their lives as well as the fractured fairy tales they wrote at our castle station!

Here are our characters!

It was awesome to see our room filled with so many wonderful visitors celebrating our learning alongside us, and it was SO much fun to get into character :)

Belle got a beautiful red rose from Mom and Dad, but in true princess fashion, she gave it to a lovely young maiden to enjoy :)

The Fairy Godmother granted Cinderella as well as the other characters wishes as she flew about the room!
The Troll was a little less grumpy when he discovered he could use his belly as a table when eating his billy goat sandwich!

The Mad Hatter came over from the Dragon Kingdom to invite Alice to his Mad Tea Party!

Red Riding Hood stayed cool under pressure, even with the Big, Bad Wolf seated right across from her!
We, too got to visit some of the other kingdoms!

We had an amazing day becoming a few of our favorite fairy tale characters and celebrating our learning with our friends, families, teachers, and peers. Thank you to everyone for creating costumes, helping us with our posters, reading our stories, and visiting our museum!

May you all live Happily Ever After
