Look What We Made With A Leaf!

On Thursday, we made our animal leaf collages using the leaves we'd collected and pressed from home. It was so neat to see the different leaves everyone brought in from their yards and neighborhoods. We loved looking at our leaves and arranging them to look like all sorts of different animals!

Hello Families!

Fall is in the air, which means leaves are gradually changing from various shades of green to bright yellows, reds, and oranges. We are planning on making animals out of leaves to tie in our study of plants and earth materials along with our study of animals in our community!

The first step in making leaf animals requires you to collect some leaves! Please take a walk with your child to go on a leaf hunt. Look for leaves of different colors, shapes, and sizes. All leaves are welcome!

Once you find the leaves, please prepare them so they are ready to use when they come into school:

• Soak the leaves in warm water for 5-10 minutes
• Blot the leaves dry
• Layer the leaves between several pieces of newspaper (make sure leaves are not overlapping)
• Put something heavy on top of the leaves (I usually use a few cook books!)
• Let leaves press for 5 days
• Place leaves in a baggie with your child’s name on it and return the leaves to school by Thursday, 10/26

A Leafy Zoo in 2R!

On Wednesday, we used the leaves we collected and pressed to create our leaf animals! We got our creative juices flowing by looking at lots of examples of different leaf animal collages online as well as some examples of leaf animals from past giraffes, and then we got to work. 

After we thought of an animal to make and we carefully laid out our design, we used Elmer's glue to stick them to our papers

Reminders for This Week

Hello, Giraffe Families!

Here are a few reminders for our week ahead:

Wednesday, October 26th will be a half day as we begin our first round of Parent-Teacher Conferences(check your sign up time here!). The following Wednesday, November 2nd will also be a half day for the remainder of our conferences. Students will be dismissed at 12:50 that day. NOTE: If you have a child enrolled in an After School Enrichment activity that takes place on Wednesday afternoons, their activity will not take place on these two Wednesdays. Dainty Delighters will have their last three sessions on 11/9, 11/16, and 11/30.

Our pumpkins and plan sheet for our Book Character Pumpkin project are due back to school by Wednesday. We will decorate our pumpkins at school on Thursday so they are ready for our celebration on Friday!

Our pressed leaves for our Animal Leaf project are not due back to school until Tuesday, November 1st, but students will need to collect their leaves this week to give them enough time to pressl. I collected leaves this weekend after all that rain, I didn't even need to soak them before pressing them :)

Last but not least, our Halloween Celebration will take place Friday afternoon at 1:00 and all family and friends are welcome to join us! We are going to put our Character Pumpkins on display while we enjoy some snacks, refreshments, games, songs, and dances to start Halloween off right.

Animal Leaf Collages

On Thursday, we made our animal leaf collages using the leaves we'd collected and pressed from home. It was so neat to see the different leaves everyone brought in from their yards and neighborhoods. We loved looking at our leaves and arranging them to look like all sorts of different animals! 

First, we brainstormed about which animals we could create with our leaves and experimented with how we would arrange our leaves on our paper. 

Once we made an image that we liked, we glued each leaf down one at a time and voila! We soon had a zoo of leaf animals in 2R! Can you guess which animals these friends made?

If you guessed  a turtle, a seal, a school of fish, and a giraffe, then you guessed correctly. It was amazing to see everyone's different creations, and we cannot wait to put our collages on display in our hallway!

The first step in making leaf animals requires you to collect some leaves. Please take a walk with your child to go on a leaf hunt--look for leaves of different colors, shapes, and sizes. All leaves are welcome!

Once you find the leaves, please prepare them so they are ready to use when they come into school:

• ·       Soak the leaves in warm water for 5-10 minutes
• ·       Blot the leaves dry
• ·       Layer the leaves between several pieces of newspaper (make sure leaves are not overlapping)
• ·       Put something heavy on top of the leaves (I usually use a few cook books!)
• ·       Let leaves press for 5-7 days
• ·       Place leaves in a baggie with your child’s name on it and return the leaves to school. We will make our leaf animals in the classroom!

 If leaves are not prepared before they are sent into the classroom, they will be too dry or delicate to glue for our collages, so please be sure to follow all the steps before sending your leaves in! 

Leaves are due by Wednesday, October 14^th
