Grand Luncheon 2018

On Monday, SMS hosted its annual Grand Luncheon, and we were joined for lunch and recess by many wonderful "Grand Guests"! Here are the visitors who joined the giraffes this year for this special day:

We also got to meet Mrs. Belanger's sweet Granny!

Thank you to all of the special visitors we had joining us on Monday

Picture Day

Not only was Thursday "Picture Day" but it was also our first sunny day of the week (and our last official day of summer!) So we took some time after taking our pictures to enjoy the outdoors.

During our morning meeting, we voted on our favorite kind of picture. Since "selfies" were our class favorite, we took a class selfie to celebrate a successful Picture Day. Say Cheese!

Enjoying Springtime

The Giraffes are so excited for the spring weather, as are the rest of the students at SMS! We've been taking advantage of sunny skies and warmer temperatures and we've been trying to get outside as much as possible!

We were able to get out in the garden at the beginning of the week for Writer's Workshop as we wrote springtime-inspired poems in our Tiny Topics notebooks

Because we switched our Related Arts time with fourth grade for the week, we also got to get out a bit more after we finished writing in the afternoon :) Our End of The Day Recesses have been a really special treat!

Ms. Riley's been excited to join in on the fun, too!

We are excited to continue enjoying the outdoors as we begin planting in the garden and gear up for Jump Rope for Heart and Bike to School Day!

Being Flexible

This week, we've learned about flexibility and how to be more flexible in our thinking. There were lots of times this week when we practiced being flexible, but one of our favorite activities we practiced was learning new recess games to help us be more flexible with our choices. We learned how to play freeze tag, sardines (reverse hide and seek), and four square, and we brainstormed many other games we could play at recess that we don't typically play.

We noticed while we were playing that we needed to adjust the rules for some games because of where we were playing. We also thought it would be fun to play capture the flag, hide and go seek tag, knockout, horse, hopscotch, jumprope, pokemon, and skylanders!

There are many at recess that we want to play with a friend, but we both have different ideas about what we would like to play. Sometimes we are reluctant to change our plan because we don't know how to play the game our friend has in mind, so we also practiced teaching games to each other as well as encouraging each other to pick a different game together when our thinking doesn't match. We've continued to add onto our Growth Mindset tree with our flexibility leaves, and we will continue to practice being flexible throughout the year!
