Hatching Chicks

On April 29th (the Monday after we returned from vacation) we placed 22 chicken eggs in an incubator we were sharing with the Seal Class. We learned all about the life cycle of a chicken and learned that it takes 21 days for a fertilized egg to hatch once it is in an incubator.

Three weeks later, on May 20th, we found our first chick had hatched and many more were on the way!

It was so exciting to see our first chick and to see our other eggs beginning to hatch!

When we returned from morning recess, we found another chick had hatched!

By the end of the day, 4 chicks had hatched and more were on the way.

By Tuesday morning, we had 7 chicks to share between our classes! Candy, Elmer Fudd, Marshmallow, Cheepie, Lucy, Tiny Chick, and Cutie were all enjoying life outside the shell :)

We were so excited to get the chance to hold them after our field trip on Tuesday! For the rest of the week, we got to keep Candy, Marshmallow, Cutie, and Tiny Chick in our classroom before they went home with Mrs. A to live in her brand new chicken coop.

We loved reading stories to the chicks, petting them, holding them, and drawing pictures for them!

On Friday morning, Mrs. A came by with her grandson to pick up the chicks to bring them home. They joined the chicks from the Seals as well as the Butterflies and are enjoying their time in their brooder until they're old enough to move into their new Chicken Coop! It was so amazing to watch them hatch and spend their first few days with them :) We will miss them very much but we know they'll have a very happy life!
